As a black man working in tech, what experiences have shaped you?
As a black man in tech, my experiences outside of tech have really helped. I come from the music & entertainment and advertising space. To be in tech with that background gives me an edge and understanding of what tech provides and not tech for tech-sake. People carry about tech for what it offers them. I am able to speak from that perspective while providing a better understanding to those that are tech illiterate.
Do you feel that your experiences growing up in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago have had an impact on your journey, and in what way?
Yes. Growing up in a diverse neighborhood like Uptown has allowed me to assimilate with multiple cultures and identities and be comfortable with myself.
What have you learned along the way as you’ve built your success and what advice do you have for black and brown people attempting to break into the business?
I have learned that it takes a team to really be successful. No man is an island as they say. You need to constantly have the right people that have your best interest in mind around you. My advice: Go where you’re celebrated, not tolerated.
